Sports coat is another fall essential and this year I started to explore more patterned options with gun club check and houndtooth being my favorites so far. Today I would like to show one of the options how I would wear a gun club check patterned sports coat.

This outfit is rather a weekend outfit or Friday business casual or smart casual, if the company allows it. Obviously, this kind of the pattern is to appear more dressed down or even fun. It is also rather for those days when it is starting to be more chilly outside, you need a bit warmer and heavier clothing, but not cold enough to wear overcoats.

The starting point for this look was to highlight this sports coat, which I recently acquired from SuitSupply. The sports coat itself is a ready-to-wear (RTW) version from pure wool from Vitale Baberis Canonico cloth. It actually fit me quite well off the rack. I only did some minor alterations around the sleeves area. Sure, there are some other elements I would like to be different (like positioning of the front buttons, maybe a bit too tight around shoulder area), but overall this is a great jacket for a very reasonable price tag. Then this nice pattern in tan, navy and burgundy checks makes this garment to a real looker.

Patterns, especially with multiple colors might be quite difficult to pair. When implementing the patterned garment you want to ensure that the garment itself is the centerpiece of the whole look, which means to keep the rest of the outfit simple. In addition, you want to pair it with pieces that are complementary. Those guidelines defined the rest of my outfit. The denim shirt complementing the navy checks as well as underlined the casual vibe of the jacket. Then the tan trousers fitting nicely into the color ensemble of the jacket. Other alternatives might be pieces in brown, navy or burgundy settled shades.

I also applied the same concept to details and shoes, keeping the shades similar to that of the jacket. To create a bit of the color contrast I chose this navy blue with dark red and brown paisley elements pocket square. I like how the colors go along with the jacket, but still creates a nice contrast. As for shoes, dark brown is probably the most suitable option here. In addition, I went with suede ones for two reasons. Firstly, I like this dark brown shade and how it fits to the whole composition. Secondly, suede underlines the casual nature of the whole look.

Truthfully yours,

Vlad
