For me one of the greatest finds this winter was an ulster coat. Its classic, strong and masculine characteristics is something that appealed to me a lot and quickly became one of my favorite winter essentials.

Ulster coat is a long, roomy, double-breasted coat with notch lapels, patch pockets, wide turnback cuffs and contrast stitching. It is belted from the back with adjustable half-belt. Normally made of heavy materials, preferably from donegal tweed.

The coat in this post is slightly modernized version with lighter inner construction, slightly shorter and bit slimmer silhouette (compared to what you usually would expect from a classic ulster coat). Nevertheless, I like those modern elements, as in my opinion, it just looks more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing, especially for my body type. Where the front of the coat is pretty classic, it is the back that is more interesting. Some elements here are big folds (pleats) either side of the back,  functional fold above the belt and long vent (fastened with three buttons). Such cut gives more freedom of movement. As for fabrics, it is made from heavy 800g Abraham Moon & Sons wool fabric in an air force blue color. This color is a medium shade of azure and was used for uniforms worn by Royal Air Force in 1920s.

Even though the fabric is pretty heavy the lighter inner construction makes it very comfortable to wear. You not really feel the weight because of its light construction. On the other hand its heavier fabric is great to keep the warmth. So far for me it is an ideal winter coat, as it keeps you really warm and is comfortable to wear.

Because of its heavier fabric and prominent details, it has quite a rugged look to it, making the coat rather informal. Even though I can also very well imagine it to be worn with a suit and a tie, more informal setting seems like more suitable for me personally. Its rugged structure is also ideal to combine it with a bit heavier and chunkier clothing as well as with more heavier footwear, like boots.

Example you can see in the look I am wearing in this post. Combined with thicker off-white turtleneck, the bulkier turtleneck goes really well with this coat. Off-white also brings some contrast to the coat. Same goes for the footwear. Balmoral boots seem like a good fit, underlying more rugged overall look.

I am really happy to have discovered this coat and looking forward to put it more into rotation this winter.

Hope you like it as well!

Truthfully yours,

Vlad
