If anyone would ask me, which type of garment gets the most of its wear this fall, clearly the turtleneck would be my winner. The main reason behind is because of its versatility and the note of sophistication and chic it brings to every look. In my opinion, they look best, when layered in combination with suits, jackets or sport coats.

In this article i would like to give you my perspective how I would wear it in three different ways: casual, business casual and somewhere in between.

Before describing each combination, let me highlight one general note, specifically, what type of turtlenecks to go for.

As for colors, I would recommend to go with plain universal colors, like different shades of blues, greys, browns or greens. Those plain colors ensure the proper foundation and versatility; also those colors are easy for combinations.

Then, I would recommend to invest into ones made of good quality fabrics. Quality is the most important aspect for me. Why? Firstly, if going with good quality materials, like cashmere or merino wool, it will keep you warm. Secondly, because of its versatility, this type of garment you want to wear a lot and you need them to last long. Investing into ones that will last long pays off significantly.

Finally, I would go with ones, which have thinner fabric. The bulky, thick ones are great for winter and maybe for cuddling 🙂 , but are not as versatile and practical as thinner ones, especially in combinations and in layering.

Having clarified the key principles on which turtlenecks to choose, let me show how I would wear it in three different styling possibilities in various settings.

Casual

Going for a casual stroll around the city or just meeting for a drink with some friends, plain turtleneck will look good with almost everything. Where regular sweater could be a great choice as well, the turtleneck brings that additional note of sophistication and chic. Adding some nice slacks, outerwear (for that additional layer) and nice shoes and you are ready to go.

For this particular look, I chose the plain turtleneck from merino wool / cashmere mix in mid grey. With that neutral, very subtle color, it is easy to combine all the rest. I chose to continue with soft palette colors (which makes the look pleasing on the eye and very light, giving some note of elegance) and went with white slacks (if you ask me I love to wear lighter pants, and would recommend to do so also in fall and winter) and beige raincoat. As mentioned before, i would recommend layering the turtleneck underneath another garment. I think this is when it looks best. Finishing with brown suede loafers, which is a perfect footwear for casual outfits.

A bit more elevated

If you want to look more elevated but not too overdressed, turtleneck is a great garment as well. Just adding a nice sport coat and dress pants will ensure that you look both effortless but elegant the same time.

For this look, I chose the plain turtleneck from merino wool in brown. The idea behind this look, was to create a more elevated, refined look in autumn colors. Thus combination with grey mélange dress trousers and with burgundy sport coat (which is the part of the suit). Burgundy brought a nice color richness to the whole look, in my opinion. Finished with dark brown double monks in suede.

Business casual

The third and the last look is more business casual appropriate. For those colder days, instead of wearing the suit with the shirt try to go with turtleneck. It will not only keep you warm, but will create a very nice, sophisticated silhouette together with the suit. For this particular example, I paired the navy suit with turquoise merino wool / cashmere mix turtleneck. I like the color of that turtleneck a lot, as it fits nicely into the blue composition and is a bit different to your usual colors but is still quite versatile. Finally, for footwear I chose those light brown loafers in calfskin to be more business appropriate.

Those are only three out of almost limitless options how you can wear the turtleneck. The key message here is that turtlenecks are very versatile garments and a definitive fall / winter essential.

Hope you enjoyed it

Truthfully yours,

Vlad
