This summer I discovered an overshirt, which, in my opinion, is an excellent layering option for this time of the year. It is also very versatile as can be worn in various combinations.

Summer, from styling perspective might be a challenging season. The weather does not allow for that much variety in combinations and layering as for example fall or spring. Sure, you can always implement some brighter colors into your outfit, but for some of us it is not really an option (for me for example having cold skin tone I need to be careful which colors I choose). Overshirt together with unstructured sports jackets offer that extra level of layering and styling opportunities. Key here is to stick to the right fabrics and choose a bit looser, relaxed fit.

I want to give you today an example on how I would wear this piece of garment for casual, yet still elegant outfit. The mix, which I like the most as it gives you a lot of room to play with and you can wear it in almost every situation.

As mentioned above, fabrics and fit are two key elements for the overshirt. As for fabrics, I personally recommend to go with linen or cotton. And the fit should be a bit looser, but not too baggy, giving you enough space for proper air circulation. It might be challenging to find that exact fit if you are not going for a bespoke version. So, if you cannot find the right one, I would go with more looser option and then make necessary adjustments at the tailor. Exactly what I did in the one I am wearing.

Overshirt I am wearing today is a navy one in a cotton/linen mix. What I like about it is that it has a bit of sports jacket feel to it. Two front patch pockets, additional chest pocket and bigger more solid buttons, all those details of a sports jacket, which gives an option to wear it as one. Combining with linen casual shirt and linen suit pants gives what I wanted to achieve – the light, casual feel with some more refined silhouette – the mix of casual and elegant. To elevate the look a bit more I also added the pocket square, again using the overshirt as a sports jacket. To round up the look, I cannot imagine better footwear as tassel suede loafers.

So, guys, I hope you like this combination and this will give you the inspiration how to use an overshirt to create your own summer look.

Truthfully yours,

Vlad
