The proper suit is the ultimate staple for a gentleman’s wardrobe. Owning and wearing a well tailored suit is something that every gentleman should have on his list. There are many occasions however when a man doesn’t want to fit in or wear something traditional. This is why the ability to style mismatched blazers and trousers will come in handy. Wearing the suit separates also allows to combine colours and patterns with more freedom – compared to the rigor of business clothes. In other words, it allows for much versatility in the styling opportunities.

It is crucial to learn how to do the proper combinations to avoid unpleasant mixes. Also, it needs to be remembered, that pairing suit separates color combinations needs a lot of attention and some attempts. At the end of the day it will pay off though and will elevate the style to the next level.

For me personally I like to stick to following rules when wearing suit separates.

As always, first and most important is the fit. Whenever you decide to go beyond formality, it is important to do it stylishly and combining well-fitted blazers and trousers, possibly tailored. A well-cut suit will allow you to play with colors and patterns, while maintaining the right amount of sophistication.

Second, in my opinion, is to have the right color and patterns contrast. Here, I try to avoid colors and patterns that are too close. Doing so creates the picture that colors are similar but not quite, which than looks not right and odd. I try to stick to one color and pattern as an anchor and build the rest around that. In my example, I chose the navy striped suit jacket as a base and combined it with a white shirt and light brown pants, which are neutral and solid colors.

Third is to match the fabrics. Wearing the suit jacket with casual chinos won’t work, in my opinion. So both have to be of similar fabric and complexity. Formal suit jacket I would combine with formal suit trousers, where relaxed, unstructured ones made of cotton, linen or more open weave wool would work with more relaxed pants.

Finally, I play with accessories and proper footwear to add that additional final flavor. Here’s where I can have a bit more fun. However, I try not to over-accessorize – picking one or two little additions would be enough for me. As for footwear, as always, loafers are at the top of my list. In my outfit, I chose the dark brown suede ones, which underline the informal nature of the total look.

I hope this article was informative and the outfit will give you some inspiration to start with. Please enjoy the final product below!

Truthfully yours,

Vlad
