Together with well-fitted blazer and leather jacket, denim jacket is another outerwear spring / summer essential and should be part of every men’s wardrobe. It is also very versatile piece, which can be dressed up or down, depending on the situation. If you do not own one yet, go get one 😉
While in the past denim jacket was rather worn for casual day-to-day situations, in recent years it had its comeback and became the real style staple. With denim’s versatility, the possibility of different outfit options is almost unlimited. Everyone will find the usage, independent of the situation or personal preference. For example, for casual outfit it can be worn with simple white T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. On the other hand, combining with dress shirt, dress pants and adding the tie would dress it up, for more business like look.
As for my taste, I like something in between. Specifically, I want to stay comfortable and have something I can wear on the daily basis, while still remain stylish. With today’s combination, in my opinion, I achieved this balance. For that, I combined the denim jacket with chinos, dress shirt and tassel loafers, which, in my opinion, is a good balance between casual and dressy.
There are key elements to this look, which I took into account.
First, I ensure the proper fit. Denim jacket should not be too long or too short. Ideal length is that it should end somewhere in the waist area. Also for pants, it is important to have the proper length. Otherwise it either looks too sloppy (if too long) or funny (if too short).
Second element is the color combination. In my opinion, the darker the denim, the more dressy the jacket will look and vice versa. I chose to wear the dark denim for more dressed up look. Another point to remember is to have the proper contrast to the pants. I would not wear the jeans in the same tonal colors as the jacket. For this combination, I chose to wear light blue chinos, which are dressier as jeans, and create nice contrast to the jacket. I also chose the blue striped dress shirt, which gives very good transition from the pants to the jacket and fits really well into the whole look.
Third element are shoes and accessories. Sneakers would make the look more casual, where the dress shoes more formal. I chose the tassel loafers, which is nice balance between two. As for accessories, I chose to wear only watch to keep the overall look clean. Additional accessories can be worn, depending on the personal preference. In my opinion, more make the look more casual.
